Detroit Opera will present Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears) from April 8 to 16, marking the first opera to be performed entirely in Spanish on the Detroit Opera House stage.
Golijov’s powerful modern opera-meets-flamenco is about the revolutionary poet Federico Garcia Lorca. The opera reimagines the life of Lorca, whose political views and sexual orientation led to his violent death during the Spanish Civil War. The production powerfully blends dance, projections, and poetry. Argentinian-American mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack will sing the role of Lorca; her co-stars will include sopranos Gabriella Reyes and Vanessa Vasquez; Antonio Najarro is flamenco choreographer; the production is staged by Brazilian director Deborah Colker and conducted by Paolo Bortolameolli. More information about the opera is available here. Photos of the cast and images from the world premiere of this production in 2022 are here.
Also: On March 30 at 7pm, we will be hosting a free public event about Federico Garcia Lorca at Detroit Opera House’s black-box theater. Professor Lisa Montes will speak at the event, and there will be readings of Lorca’s plays and poetry and performances of music from the opera. The event is produced in partnership with Detroit Public Theatre and Inside/Out Literary Arts.
